How to Create a Personal Style

How to Create a Personal Style

Avoid the problem of walking into your closet and finding nothing to wear by creating a personal style. When you know how you want to look and surround yourself with accessories that reflect that personal style, you'll find that putting together a "look" is easy. Your fashion will no longer be a faux pas, but rather an individual statement of who you are.

Things You'll Need:

Clothes

New make-up

Accessories to match your new style

Step
1

Determine what image you want to create for yourself. Look through fashion and celebrity magazines and clip out pictures that reflect the inner you. Keep in mind your lifestyle, since you won't need a lot of heavy jackets and boots if you live in Hawaii and your job may require a certain look.

Step
2

Go through your closet and get rid of clothes that you haven't worn in 6 months, since those probably aren't your favorites anyway. Also remove any items you don't enjoy wearing or that don't fit. If you're scared to get rid of something, pack it away until you're at ease with your new duds.

Step
3

Create a list of must-haves from your fashion research and see which items you might already have lurking in your revamped closet. Any that are missing can be put on a shopping list for future purchase.

Step
4

Review items that you wear often to discover why you like them. Make note of colors, textures, fabrics and styles that you frequently wear and put these notes on your shopping list. Also make note of items you particularly don't like so you won't make the same shopping mistake twice.

Step
5

Window shop before making any purchases. Check discount stores first, if you're on a budget, before heading to more boutique-like shops. Make note of which items are available at each store and head home to compare prices and determine which items will round out the clothes you already have.

Step
6

Make your fashion purchases, either all at once or over time. When you get them home, play dress-up and take picture of yourself in your different outfits. Arrange the pictures and determine which ones actually accentuate your assets. Leave price tags on so you can return any items you determine don't actually fit with the new you.

Step
7

Finalize your new personal style with an updated hair style and make-up. Again look through magazines, cutting out pictures of hair styles you like to take with you to the salon. For make-up, go to the larger department stores and get a free makeover from the ladies at the make-up counter.

Tips & Warnings

When clipping pictures, don't be afraid to choose a picture just for the jacket or skirt, since you'll be mixing and matching to create an original look.

Use the same steps when purchasing accessories, shoes, and jewelry to match your new clothing style.

When at the makeup counter, don't feel required to purchase everything they use, just buy things you feel you can't get anywhere else then head to the discount store to pick up similar products more cheaply.
